With a new baby being born every 8 seconds in the United States, parents everywhere are probably stressed out about making sure they do everything right. But choosing your newborn photographer shouldn’t bring you any stress!
Capturing newborn photos should be a time that brings joy into the heart of parents and something you cherish for years to come.
But how do you know what makes a good newborn photographer? What should you know before you head into your newborn photoshoot?
Let’s get started with some newborn photography tips for parents, so you can feel calm and pleased during your session. Here are some questions to get you prepared before your photo session.
Currently, there are no regulations or certifications required for newborn photography. So, it’s very easy for someone who has little to no experience with newborns or photography to handle your newborn photos! Scary!
That’s why it’s so important to do your research before choosing a photographer. Some attributes you may want to look for are:
Newborn photographers should love what they do, and it should shine through in their work and their presence.
Safety is of utmost importance when having professional newborn photos taken. All of the adorable photos that you see online or in a studio should have been handled safely by an assistant or edited with photo-editing software.
Ask the photographer what their safety standards are and how they create complex and delicate poses. Inquiring about the length of time is also beneficial.
Choosing a professional photographer is best, but also find one who specializes in newborn photography. Don’t be afraid to ask how long have they been in the business, where they received their training, or, in particular, how to manage and photograph newborns.
Some photographers prefer babies who are a certain age. For example, under 14 days old is ideal for photographing newborns since they are more likely to stay asleep throughout the session and are easier to pose. Some photographers will photograph older babies and premies as well.
Because anyone can pose as a newborn photographer, be aware that if a price seems too good to be true, it probably is!
These photographs will last you a lifetime, so you definitely don’t want to cut corners on them. A professional photographer’s prices will reflect in their work. Remember, you’re not just paying for photos, but to ensure the safety of your newborn.
Ask about sitting fees, packages, or specials the photographer may offer and be upfront about your budget.
Being a new parent is hard work and newborn photographers likely book up many months in advance. Start searching for a photographer by mid-pregnancy to make sure you find everything you’re looking for.
When you’ve fallen in love with a potential photographer, be sure to ask how far out in advance they book.
Having a baby is an incredibly special time and your newborn photoshoot should be a breeze. When you know the answers to these five questions, you’ll have peace of mind and create wonderful memories that you’ll cherish forever.
